Long, long ago, the humans prayed: "we know we will die, but please, would that we could know before we do." The Fates, who had spun, measured, and cut so many threads before, made the humans a creature to teach them how to measure their lives: and so they spun a spider and measured its thread, and it was cut to be a timekeeper.
